In addition to the above number work, the following maths can be practised in a real-life context, making it more meaningful for children.
In Early Years: In Year 1
In Year 2:
Please practise counting forwards and backwards starting with number 1-10 and up to 20 if appropriate. Children should also be familiar with their number bonds to 10 e.g. 4 + 6 = 10 and 9 + 1 = 10. (Give them interesting items to count with!)

Encourage your child to look for maths all around them e.g. house numbers, building shapes and simple patterns.
In addition to the above children to learn 2x and 10x tables. Children should also be secure with their number bonds to 10 and know number bonds to 20.

Continue to look for maths all around, children should begin to describe the features of 2D shapes and recognise some 3D shapes in their environment. Encourage them to recognise times such as o’clock and half past.
In addition to the above children to learn 3x 4x and 5x tables. They should also be able to use their number bonds with numbers up to 100 e.g. 74 + 6 = 80.

Continue to look for maths all around: encourage your children to use kitchen scales and measuring jugs to measure in kilograms, grams, litres and millilitres. Continue to teach your child to read times. Help them to spend their pocket money, thinking about what they can buy and how much change to expect.
  • once they have 30 signatures to say that they’ve practised with you at home, they can come and get a very special maths sticker Children should practise bonds/ tables every night. Teachers will check that this is being done. Children will have a sheet for you to sign
  • Children need to chant WHOLE TABLE – not just the multiples. They should chant quickly and should practise being able to answer quickfire questions within a few seconds
  • Just like for reading – once they have 30 signatures to say that they’ve practised with you at home, they can come and get a very special maths sticker
